The Montessori Push Box is used in Montessori Infant and Toddler classrooms to experience cause and effect, strengthen fine motor skills and develop hand-eye coordination. The child pushes the balls through the lined holes - the lining requires the child to push down on the ball to get it into the box, strengthening their finger muscles.
This material also develops a childs understanding of object permanence - knowing that just because they can no longer see something, it does not mean that it has disappeared. Rather, they wait to see the ball appear through the bottom hole and onto the ramp. This allows them to gain a better understanding of how things may disappear and reappear throughout their daily lives.
